January Meeting and Newsletter

Hi everyone,

Below is the link to the January 2016 newsletter.

HLAA-LA January 2016 Newsletter

Please note, I will no longer be listing birthdays and anniversaries on the newsletter. Unfortunately, the roster I was using for this information is very outdated and does not include many new members.

We hope that many of you will come to our chapter meeting next Saturday, January 23. We will be discussing the PCAST (President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology) report and how it could potentially affect us as consumers, and the hearing healthcare industry as a whole.

You can read more about the PCAST at the following links:

Our president Pat Widman will be out of town for a much-deserved vacation, so Steering Committee member and Treasurer Ken Cluskey will be leading the discussion. As always, there will be refreshments and coffee and the meeting will be captioned and looped.

See many of you on Saturday!

2015 Holiday Party!

HLAA 2016 Holiday Party

Our 11th annual HLAA-LA party was held on 12/13/15 at the beautiful Moorpark home of our hostess Nancy Mullen Gray. We so appreciate your warm hospitality. Thank you.

It was a wonderful evening of shared food, drink, conversation and laughs with good friends. How great is it to socialize with others who “get it”?

Check out the pictures of our always hilarious White Elephant gift exchange . You really never know what you’ll end up taking home with you!

Hello everyone,

Attached is the last newsletter of 2015 via the link below.

Our November meeting will take place on the THIRD Saturday this month, November 21. We are keeping our wonderful annual holiday tradition going with a rap session on surviving the holidays with hearing loss, followed by a potluck lunch. Bring a dish to share, if you’d like! This is always a great way to kick off the holiday season, so come ready to gab and to eat!

Happy Holidays, HLAA-LA family!

Potentially Some Big Changes in the Hearing Aid and Health Industries

Hello Everyone,

Here is a great article in Forbes magazine about recommendations that the President’s Council of Advisors on Science & Technology have made that might lead to significant improvements within the hearing aid industry. Their goal is to provide less expensive hearing aids and more choices to the hearing loss community.

The report summarizes some of the problems with the hearing health industry and basically says it is really messed up. The co-chair of the committee who drafted the report stated “the people in the hearing loss community have known this for a long time.”

Enjoy the reading.

November 2015 Meeting

Hi all,

Hope everyone is enjoying what seems like our first FALL weekend. I don’t know about you but I am more than done with temps in the 90s.

I want to thank everybody who signed up at the last meeting for one of the committees. We can still use help, particularly when it comes to set-up and clean-up at meetings. If you’re able to lend a hand, let me know or sign the clipboards that will be at the meeting on 11/21. Remember, many hands mean a lighter load!

October 2015 Meeting Transcripts

Hello everyone – Transcript of our October 24 meeting is available at the link below.

It was a great meeting… and I think we all truly enjoyed the presentation/demo from Barb Velasquez of The Sam Simon Foundation and “Dude” – an adorable Shih Tzu who’s training to be a hearing dog. We also had a great discussion about some of our chapter goals, led by new Prez Patricia Widman!

October 2015 Meeting Transcript

Our Next Meeting is October 24th!

Our next fab meeting is next Saturday, Oct. 24th. Our very special guests will be a speaker from the Sam Simon Foundation and a guest dog (or dogs?). All dogs are great, but service dogs are the best! Could you use a hearing one to help your lifestyle? A family member and helper for life? Find out for yourself and come with your questions. It should be fascinating (and adorable)!
