Our chapter has helped and encouraged so many members to understand, appreciate and learn to successfully move forward through the help and support of our chapter members. Through this, numerous success stories come forth including our own Lisa Yuan!
Although Lisa recently moved to the other side of the U.S., she is endeared and loved by our chapter through her many years of dedication to the chapter. Lisa’s story of what the chapter has helped her overcome and succeed is a story well worth sharing.
Let’s learn more about her story and the influence the chapter had on her life.

To our chapter members
As you may know, we are now in search of a new home for our chapter. It’s an exciting journey ahead but it will take involvement from everyone to offer ideas, input and to help us eventually find a new home. Here are the top choices thus far:
- Dairy Queen
- Dodger Stadium
- Staples Center
- The Forum
- Six Flags
Tell us what you think and please share further ideas you may have.
Getting ready for a movie part?
I’m sharing this message from a graduate student at UC Irvine Hearing and Speech Lab, who is looking for cochlear implant users for his research. You won’t have to do much except sit there with a funky sensor cap on (see image below), and will be paid $10 an hour plus gas mileage:
The purpose of this study is to investigate how the head shapes electrical fields produced by cochlear implants. The aim is to help improve medical devices that use electrical stimulation to treat hearing-related and various neurological disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy).

We are having a very important meeting this Saturday and hope many of you will join us. We’ll be looking at the state of our chapter… where we’ve been, where we’re at, and where we’re headed. We can’t do this without your input! This is YOUR chapter, so please bring your thoughts, suggestions and ideas to this lively, open discussion.
As always, there will be coffee and plenty of refreshments, and the meeting will be captioned and looped.
***It was a long time coming but with the hard work and dedication of our Website Committee, we are proud to promote positive change with the release of the new website!
This chapter has a lot of passion and devotion to our HOH community so as the hearing needs and challenges continue to evolve, so too will this website. Ongoing new features and enhancements will be announced in the coming months so please continue to check in on a regular basis. And, we want to hear your ideas on how this website can better serve our chapter and HOH community, and be a great place for people to know that “we get it”.
Please use the Contact menu link to send us your comments and suggestions, plus anything that may not be working to your expectations.
Our Annual HLAA-LA garage sale is right around the corner. This year our garage sale will be held at the home of Joe and Lisa Beth Snyder in Altadena. This fundraiser is one of our biggest efforts as we try to raise $1000 that goes toward the cost of captioning our meetings. At the end of the sale, any unsold items are always donated to charity.

Hope to see many of you at this Saturday’s meeting! We’ll hear from a panel of “mixed couples” (one partner with hearing loss and one partner with normal hearing), who will discuss how hearing loss can affect their relationships. We welcome you to invite your friends, family members and significant others. It should be an informative, engaging and entertaining discussion, moderated by our own Dana Sunderland!
See you Saturday!
